if you said the boards are supposed to be on top of the car and not on side of the freeway, you are right.
almost all the way to san-o on saturday we heard a loud noise inside the excursion. i looked back to see a couple on a harley waving their hands and pointing at the boards on the top of the car. a second later we heard another loud noise and saw our boards float through the air and slide into the side of the freeway. awesome. they were still attached to the front rack that broke off the car.
amazingly, the boards are pretty much fine- the fins are a little sanded down and my dad's board had a small ding, but no major damage. lucky.
you see, this is not the first time we have lost boards to the san clemente stretch of freeway. last time we lost three boards- lost them = major damage. by the time we got to the other side of the freeway (they flew over 4 lanes of traffic) to see what happened all we found were pieces of a board and the other two were gone. i still like to think i will paddle up next to some one on a bright red mctavish and ask where they got it, only to hear them tell me a cool story of how they watched it fall 60 feet from the sky to the side of the freeway and they pulled over and snagged it. at that point i would ask for it back.

Crazy! I'm glad there was no damage! This reminds me of when our christmas tree flew off the car on the freeway in Utah. But it was no where to be found. Maybe there are freeway trolls that swipe up stuff that flies onto their roads. Just lookin out.
Thank goodness nobody was hurt!! My dad pulled over many a time to tighten a board during my childhood. As for my husband, I make him drive a snail's pace down that stretch just to be safe. That kind of stuff make me paranoid!
oh-no!! and with the rack! haha!!when me and doug got rear-ended in my parents van at the turtle bay intersection, the board he had custom-made for me flew out the back window and that was the first thing he looked for and it was nowhere to be found!!! the rear window was gone and so we figured it flew out. we searched everywhere and figured some car that was rubbernecking in the on-coming traffic must've snatched it up. and, like you, i wanna find someone on it and ask where they got it, too, and see what their story is.
sorry, the computer posted 3 of my comments. weird.
CLASSIC!!
so sad, your story (the one from years ago) and liko's. even in my non-surferness i ache for your beautiful boards.
on another note, the rack came disconnected??! that's crazy!
OHHH NOO NOT AGAIN? you billings have bad luck or something? what the heck?
That is rad! I'm thinking that they were supposed to be totaled, but since you lost three already the surf gods smiled down on you and saved them. I'm glad your family was not harmed in this.
Aaron and I miss surfing san-o, SO JEALOUS, that sucks about the boards, good thing not to much damage. Aaron and I had that happen to us one time too, but no damage!!!
Good thing the people on the Harley didn't get smacked in the face with 2 surf boards!!!
I can't wait for that day you meet those people either! Actually something kind of similar happened to Ben. In Hawaii he watched an abandoned bike without tires sitting behind Foodland for months & finally took it home & got new tires for it & used it as his transportation to work. A couple months later a women stopped him & told him it was her mothers mode of transportation before she passed away & it meant a lot to them until someone stole it (that wasn't Ben). He gave it back.
Bummer, but at least the damage was minimal!
Oh crap! At least it wasn't as bad as the last time...
hey! we are going to disneyland on fri around 12-1 for the day/night. just me and the boys cuz luke will be outta town! call me if u wanna meet up. maybe we can get lauren to go too!
yikes! that sucks about the baords you lost! and I'm glad these didn't get ruined too!
Okay, but what cracks me up about you is that you stopped to take a picture of it on the side of the freeway. I can just see you saying, "Wait Dad, I have to get a pic for the blog".
