say hello to our little friends

we got a pet this last week. actually we got two, and killed them both within a record two hours of bringing them home. who knew that you had to condition your tap water to make it safe for little fishies? they were only feeder fish, but i felt so bad. the next morning they were lovingly placed in a ziplock bag by luke and i took them to the pet store for a return- 14 day guarantee policy! the guy looked at me like i was an idiot for bringing back feeder fish, luckily i know that i am one so it didn't bother me much. this time i upgraded to the fantailed goldfish, which usually costs a whopping $6 but was on sale for 99 cents, and i got the special water conditioning drops and this little lady-or man- has been alive in our house since monday- not too bad! it even survived it's first "tank" cleaning. which i must note that we found this great fish "tank" at the salvation army for $2- so much cooler than anything they had at petco.
the more i look at it, this picture makes the fish look really scary, but it is so cool. i can honestly say that i like having it next to my kitchen- it makes me happy to see it swimming around and i wish that i could join it for a swim. velzy loves it too, she walks to where she can see it, points and says "fish!" needless to say, we have spent a lot of time looking into the bowl and tapping on the glass to make it swim around. we also have a few little squirrel friends that come around to play. salted cashews aren't bad for the wildlife are they? velzy used to try to say squirrel which would come out sounding like "quirl" but these days everything that moves on four legs is a "horse." and now that i look at this picture i notice that it is scary too since the squirrel has red eyes, but it is really cute in real life.

crazy how that fishbowl is lit up...from the camera flash I guess.

It's so cute how kids love animals. Good job on all your deals with the fish & fish bowl!

ok you're cracking me up! Let me just tell you a short version of my first fish experience- my mom being the gentle nurturer that she is, was distraught that one of our fish "killed" the other fish, so she gathered us round the stove and boiled the "killer" fish. NICE huh? needless to say I haven't been able to get my girls a fish, the trauma is still too real.

That fish bowl is AWESOME. I was thinking about getting the boys a fish or two, especially since they are so cheap. I forgot about the whole cleaning the bowl thing. Ugh. That's not fun.

I just tried to leave a comment and it wouldn't work. Hmmpff.

Anyway, that squirrel looks like some crazed demon with the red eyes. Do you ever feed them? Don't let V get too close. Maybe they have rabies.

We killed all four of our fish within a week and that as with the water helper thing. I hope yours live longer. They're fun to look at and I love that V says "fish!"
