marking my territory

when you bounce from one rental place to another, across the country every year or so you don't really get that cozy home feeling all at once.  we have tried to make each place we have lived in more "our own."
previous examples:
-when we moved into our apartment in mclean virginia we hung huge tapa cloth from tonga on the wall and made the coolest border in the kitchen of surfing pictures.
-when we moved to reston virginia we painted the walls and hung lots of great family pictures.
-when we moved back to hawaii we didn't really do much- wait- we hung a cluster of vintage and new hawaii license plates in the kitchen and some cute little birdies in frames in the girls room.

now we have moved to redlands.  my mom came out for the last 2 days to help me organize and put things away and once again has assisted in marking our territory.
i give you- the bamboo forrest in our living room:

it's so cool. it's pretty amazing the amount of fun you can have with a $5 roll of contact paper.
we had so much fun we couldn't stop there- this is in our room for luke above his desk
and i am sure you can figure out what this is
seriously, this was so much fun- and quick too!  thanks melissa for letting me copy your cool idea.

What a cool idea!! Where did you get the stencils...or maybe you didn't use stencil?!?! We are painting the room that is soon to be my office and I would love to have something "tropical" themed on the walls...and contact paper is uber cheap!!!

Awesome job Ashley! By the way...if you're up for it, we're not too far from Redlands and it would be fun to get together sometime =)

wait what??? You cut out all those pieces ... freehand??? How in the world??? I need more instructions!

Erika said...

Like everyone else was asking...did you do those freehand or use stencils? My guess is freehand since you're super crafty. Man, way to save big $$$. Makes me think I've spent WAY TOO MUCH on the wall decor in the girls rooms. Next time, I'll have to try your trick...or, better yet, pay you to design and cut for me :)

I'm inspired. Fo real. Watch out Micah cuz the art projects are coming:)

Moving really bites-and I can't even imagine trying it with two little ones, but part of me is really jealous of all the newness. How fun to buy new trash cans and decorate. I think I found my winter project.

it looks like you found black contact paper, no? much better than the stuff i found!

I love it all! is the octopus the one from that adorable fabric? so cute!

You did an awesome job! You try to make it sound so easy, but if I were going to try and cut out contact paper, well, my octopus would probably look more like a squid!

That is pretty awesome! I want to try it too!!

That's so fun! You are so creative and have such great style. I'd like to mark our territory in more ways than stained carpet and dirty walls:)

I just ordered a wall decor for my son from an etsy shop that also uses contact paper. I love it but it's hum.... expensive. I love how you did this by yourself. Can you please give us more directions. Did you drwa on the back? did you use an exacto knife?

oh and the waves are much better in santa cruz so come visit us!!!
