swimming with the sharkies

saturday morning was beautiful.
we meet up with our friends the smiths in haleiwa, got on a boat, and motored 3 miles outside the harbor. then we stopped. right about then sharks started to come to the boat. and right about then i got a little nervous.
galapagos sharks come when they hear the motors of the boats for a free meal, have been doing it for years.  skipper chip showed us how to get in the cage "the most dangerous part" (you sure about that?), we got in, and they let out the ropes.  i didn't realize they did that, it was weird to not be right by the boat.and i am not going to lie, as soon as i got in and looked down and saw a shark swim beneath me, i kinda tripped out and it took me a good minute for two before my breathing got normal again.  white knuckles for sure
but they really are amazingly beautiful animals.  had i been out surfing or swimming and saw a shark i think i would really freak out, but since we were more or less going out to their realm it wasn't too bad.
there were a few sharks with hooks in their mouths. i love this picture.
but they did keep you on your toes.  every time i would look one direction out of the corner of my eye i would see more in another direction so i was constantly swimming in circles looking all around, and my arms and or butt was always getting bumped out of the bars on the cage so that was fun.
i really wish this picture was in focus, it would have been so cool to catch him taking a big bite.
and to think i had to bend his arm to get him to go
it really was an amazing experience and we had so much fun.  thanks again smiths for the invite!and to prove we weren't traumatized, we surfed that afternoon and i didn't think about sharks once.  as opposed to after watching shark week last year, which got to me for months...
and on this note, i think i am going to take the week off from blogging- except to update about fridays beach destination.  where do you gals want to go????

Glad we all lived to tell the tale. Ol' Captain Hook was probably my favorite shark.

I guess Alissa hasn't seen Shipmate Chip yet, but will get the mask to you as soon as we can. Hope you don't mind me stealing some pictures since we have a problem remembering to document once in a lifetime events.

Get out Ashley. This was a great post, although I sort of, maybe, had white knuckes on my mouse just reading about it.

Ok I didn't swim with the sharks, but for some reason after reading your post this morning, I thought about them the whole time I was surfing! Ha! Ha!

You guys are so brave. Sharks are beautiful, but I prefer to see them at aquariums. I don't really even like them on shark week - because I think about it too much afterward. :) What a neat experience!

All I have to say is, "NO THANKS!" I am already terrified...don't need to add to that phobia...like spiders...ewww! Not that sharks aren't facinating...and beautiful...I just believe in giving them their space. It's worked for me, so far! Brave little girl, you are!

So fun! Danny and I did that a couple of times, and we loved it. The last time, which was like a year ago, there was a baracuda hanging out there, which could have easily gotten through the cage but nobody seemed too concerned about it.
