because you won't remember...

isn't it funny to think that all the time, love, and effort that you put into your wee little kiddies the first few years won't even be remembered by them?  i just hope that the things we do with them will become ingrained in their hearts and they will love the things that luke and i love.
(this is long, and you don't have to read it all, really. feel free to skip to a post with pictures)

so velzy and ivy, in case you don't remember this i am writing it down.  today you two had so much fun with us, your amazingly cool parents.  luke got off work a little earlier than usual- cause he woke up before early to go to work.  so we walked to good old hukilau.  it was raining, cause that is what happens on the east side and we decided to take a walk down the beach.  probably the funest walk on the beach i have ever had, and i have walked or ran that stretch of beach more times than i can count.  we started walking, and had to stop to pop every blue bubble that we could, so we stared out slow, till i went ahead and popped a whole bunch to get them out of the way.  we made it to the hukilau swamp where while your dad and velzy were racing the water on it's way to meet the river mouth i saw a poor little fishy flopping in need of rescue.  so velz and he picked it up and dropped it a few times- they are slippery, then let it go with all it's brothers and sisters.
next luke found a tiny little nudibranch on the sand that was white and blue, and about the size of a finger nail.   so we watched it swim in the cup of his hand filled with water then let him go.  neat-o.
then back to the beach to walk some more... still popping blue bubbles we walked till luke found a tire.  velzy and he rolled it into the water a few times and watched it bob in the waves for a while.  all the while, ivy was collecting bottle caps, random pieces of plastic, and sea weed.
next we came across a large pile of nets, bouys, and ropes that a fisher man lost at sea.  so we played with it for a bit.  luke and i also watched a little wave that has potential to be a super fun left, when is the next hurricane coming so we can surf it?
did you know that sad turtles (sand crabs as we call them in california) like to eat blue bubbles?  we had a lot of fun putting blue bubbles in the white water and waiting for the sand turtles to grab them, then we would grab the sand turtles.  velz and ivy had fun holding them and luke showed me how you can bring this little scale thing part back and see where all the eggs are.  so cool.  oh, and ivy got in on the blue bubble popping too, she would take my hand and stomp the sand then go on her merry way.
after that got old we turned inland and "hiked" as velzy states it, around melekahana and got a little dirty, then back to the beach via the old lifeguard stand trail.
there was a fun little bank in the sand so luke and i pretended we were surfing the sand wave, ivy and velzy looked at us like we were crazy.
by then little legs were tired, so velzy was on luke's back and ivy on my shoulders as we ran and jumped on our way back- stopping for a few dips, petting the dog, showering, and walked home.
like i said, you won't remember, but it was really fun.  my favorite parts were when you guys would do something funny, or cute and your dad and i would just look at each other and grin that grin that only a parent who is completely and perfectly happy can grin.  and it happened a lot.

i know just the grin you're talking about and it is the best feeling in the world. you always love it when others appreciate how awesome/cute/funny your child is, but there is nothing like looking at the person who you created the child with and sharing that knowing look that basically says, "AHHHHHH! can you believe how GREAT/cute/WONDERFUL/perfect our kid is???!!!"

i love fun times like this.

You are a really good writer! They say these are the most important years to teach them, so even if they don't remember specific events, something must stick!
I love your aloha friday. The beach is such a fun place for a playdate. We're still stuck indoors here in AZ!

i remember a few random, fun memories we made together as a family and i am sure that your two little girls will remember moments like these! it will become something natural during childhood, and memories that they will treasure when they become grown-ups like us. i distinctly remember feeding frozen peas to the fishes at hanauma bay, beyond the reef, while sitting in a blow-up raft. don't know how old i was, but a loooong time ago. random ones (so many, too) that hold value and make me smile -- even now.
